By Andy McSmith Independent.co.uk Tuesday, 15 September 2009 ![]() Lovingly hand-reared by pupils in a Kent school, Marcus the lamb met his end in an abattoir. Marcus the lamb, who was hand-reared by children at a Kent primary school, is dead. The school's headteacher defied protests by a small number of parents, backed by animal rights groups and animal lovers, and yesterday stuck to a decision to have Marcus slaughtered. His carcass will be auctioned to pay for more farm animals. Andrea Chapman, head of Lydd Primary School, Romney Marsh, appealed to the public yesterday to "move on" for the sake of the children's education. "The decision to send the wether lamb for meat, which has the support of the school council and staff, the governing body and the majority of parents, has now been carried out," she said. Ms Chapman added that the children have had it explained to them ever since the school began rearing pets that animals such as Marcus are eaten as meat. "When we started the farm in spring 2009, the aim was to educate the children in all aspects of farming life and everything that implies," she said. The school has been the centre of controversy since a small group of parents protested last week about the decision to kill the lamb. The television chat show host Paul O'Grady offered to buy Marcus, as did several animal sanctuaries. ______________ Those of you with logged in Livejournal accounts can follow the original source link and easily make a comment on this story. I did: This will teach the children, all right... Tuesday, 15 September 2009 at 04:55 am (UTC) It will teach them the ways of the selfish people in this world who only think of money as a bottom line, who have no compassion or empathy, who are cruel, small-minded and just downright nasty and vile. Humane people offered to buy the lamb. There was no reason to slaughter it. I hope someday someone or something educates Ms Chapman in what for her will be a whole new realm of understanding: the world of feelings and sensitivity.

Owner Allison Morgan, 44, of Newport, south Wales, said that Lucky had died undergoing surgery to rectify her handicap. The duckling initially faced a bleak future when she fractured her leg in an accident and her foot healed facing the wrong way. Two-month-old Lucky, breaking-in her new sandal, at home in Newport Mrs Morgan called in local cobbler Kelvin Reddicliffe whose duck footwear design meant Lucky avoided being put down. BBC 19 August 2009 The case of a Northern Ireland dog on death row for being a banned breed is to go to the Court of Appeal. "He has never harmed anyone or ever would, if he did I would have put my hand up to it," she said. Shannon Brown said the Bruce does not pose a threat to people An online petition calling for the dog, found as a puppy in Bangor, County Down, by Ms Brown, had received nearly 16,000 signatures. She is getting legal aid to fight the case, which has cost the local council about £17,000. ![]() Lily the Barbary lion...now ![]() Lily's new mate, Simon Belfast Telegraph Wednesday, 5 August 2009 Belfast's most famous big cat - Lily the rare hand-reared Barbary lion - has left the city for an assignation in eastern Europe, it was announced today. The two-year-old is on her way to a new life in the Hodonin Zoo in the Czech Republic and a date with four-year-old Simon with whom it is hoped she will eventually mate. Barbary lions are extinct in the wild and there are less than 100 in captivity around the world, under 40 in Europe. Lily rose to stardom soon after her birth in 2007 when she was rejected by her mother and hand-reared by zoo keeper Linda Frew in her family home. Ms Frew was sad to see her charge leave, but said: "The time has come for her departure and my job is done. I feel proud that I have helped Lily for a short part of her life.Article about Lily as growing baby "I hope she will enjoy her new surroundings and settle with Simon and the other lions at Hodonin Zoo." Lily is taking a two-day road trip to her new home. Zoo keepers from the Czech zoo arrived in Belfast last night and picked her up in a specially adapted lion-friendly transport box. A ferry to Scotland, drive down to the Channel Tunnel and then 10 hours across Europe to Hodonin was the chosen route, all overseen by a zoo vet. Lily left behind parents Fidda and Qays and brother Charlie in Belfast - another Czech zoo, Olomouc, took delivery of second brother Boris in July. Simon's sister Buzetta will be meeting up with Boris as part of the lion dating game. | ||||||||||
